Solution
Understand the method, then try it yourself
Understand supply and demand, elasticity, opportunity cost, and basic macroeconomic models. Include the graph axes and state which variables are held constant. Explain the economic meaning of a number after you calculate it so the model connects to the question.
Worked example
If price rises by 10% and quantity demanded falls by 20%, what is price elasticity using these percentage changes?
- Divide percentage change in quantity demanded by percentage change in price: −20% / 10% = −2.
- The absolute value is 2, which is greater than 1, so demand is elastic over this stated change.
- Quantity responds proportionally more than price. If the question instead supplies raw starting and ending values and requests the midpoint method, calculate both percentage changes using their averages.
Tips for a useful explanation
- Distinguish a movement along a curve from a shift of the curve.
- State the assumptions that hold other variables constant.
- Check whether your class reports elasticity with a sign or as an absolute value.
Read the worked steps, check the result against the original question, and explain the method in your own words. If a step is unclear, include your attempt and ask about that step. AI can make mistakes; verify the reasoning and use the assistance your teacher permits.
